The University of Manitoba implemented a Deaf Education program for the 2012 intake year only (students are due to graduate from the program in 2014). In correspondence with Department Head (and professor) of the program, Dr. Charlotte Enns, the following information was made available:
Dr. Enns also advised that a number of Deaf individuals have completed the B.Ed program at the University of Manitoba in the past ("at least 10 in the past 10 years"- Enns, 2014). In addition, there are currently 4 Deaf teachers working with Dr. Enns to complete their Masters degrees, all of which are focusing their research on issues in Deaf Education. The Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba also graduated the first Deaf doctoral student in 2006 (Enns, 2014).
Sincere thanks to Dr. Charlotte Enns for her assistance with this information, and for providing the following document outlining the 2012-2014 Deaf Education program information.
- Program was designed to meet CAEDHH standards, so the courses are similar to other programs in Canada.
- It is a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (PBDE), which means it is between a B.Ed and a Master’s program, and is intended for people who are already certified teachers.
- 18 people were recruited to the program; however, 4 withdrew within the first year due to personal reasons. Although program tried to recruit Deaf teachers, only one enrolled in the program.
- Currently, 14 teachers are expected to complete the program in summer 2014

The brochure attached above outlines the courses offered throughout this program. These courses appear to include a more balanced approach to the different streams of communication, discussing ASL and other signed languages in multiple courses as opposed to only one (or none). ASL knowledge is not listed as a prerequisite for students, however it is important to note that prerequisites are not listed anywhere on the brochure. The program has been designed to be as flexible in its delivery as possible (including evenings, weekends, and online), making it accessible to students that may have a more demanding schedule and/or teachers who continue to work full time while participating.
